“EVACUATE CAMPUS” – California wildfires strike Maritime College

PortandTerminal.com, October 28, 2019

VALLERO, CA – At 09:43 local time yesterday, California Maritime Academy officials published an emergency tweet “EVACUATE CAMPUS. Fire has jumped the freeway”.  The academy reported yesterday that all cadets were safely evacuated.

The Academy has published this update on their website today:

Due to the fire and ongoing power outage on the Cal Maritime campus, all classes and activities are canceled for Monday and Tuesday. Information about the reopening will be communicated after a campus inspection is completed Monday morning. Cadets who have been displaced and need a place to stay may call (707) 315-6745.

The Academy also announced that all displaced cadets who were at the Georgia St. location have been relocated to other housing. Current news reports are showing the main campus buildings are unharmed. The upper parking lot area of the complex though has received fire damage.

The California State University Maritime Academy is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system and is one of seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States. It is located in Vallejo, California, just north of San Francisco.

Twitter feed from area resident yesterday, October 27: “Fire in Vallejo has burnt down to the water. There are Maritime Academy personnel actively fighting the fire. Fire burning actively under the Carquinez Bridge”
