HONG KONG – Emergency personnel were called in soon after 2.30 pm when a yacht burst into flames in Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter in Hong Kong today.
“The diesel reservoir of the boat appeared to have also exploded, the fire sending out a huge plume of black smoke over Victoria Harbour. Firefighters said a total of three boats caught fire.
As of 4pm, three yachts had caught fire and the firefighting operation was still going on, a government spokesman said. By 5pm, the flames had been extinguished.
The three yachts were anchored alongside each other, about 50 metres from the shore.
“Some residents of Hong Kong do use yachts or pleasure boats as an alternative to the very expensive housing market on land.”
