MELFI, ITALY – In late July the wheels of dozens of brand new Cinquecentos that had just come out of the Fiat factory in Melfi were stolen while they were on a freight train headed to northern Italy.
The vehicles had just left the factory when the theft occurred. By the time the theft had been discovered the train had already made several stops so it has proven difficult for police to pin down exactly where the heist took place.
“If anything, the type of theft is astonishing: to be able to steal the wheels of a car (in this case, several cars) from a train it is necessary to first lift them and then place them on bricks. This latter operation requires time and attention.” (Italian Media Reaction)
