STAMFORD, CT – Firefighters in Connecticut on Monday rescued two people from a pickup truck that had become submerged in the icy waters of Long Island Sound at the height of the snowstorm.
According to officials, the driver was doing ‘donuts’ in the snow-covered parking lot in the harbor at Cummings Park in Stamford when the truck plunged into the frigid water.
The rescue was shows Stamford firefighters in special thermal gear going into the water to pull the occupants of the sinking pickup truck to safety
The female occupant of the truck was observed standing in the bed of the truck and shouting that there was a man trapped inside.
The firefighters in the water helped the woman climb onto the tower ladder, but the truck continued sinking amid the worsening blizzard.
As the vehicle became completely submerged, one firefighter who has been holding onto the male victim’s hand throughout the rescue finally was able to pull him through a small open rear window.
Once he was free, firefighters placed the man into the tower ladder and both victims were brought to shore to be examined by paramedics.
The man was transported to Stamford Hospital for further treatment. The woman refused medical attention.
No rescuers were injured during the incident, which is now being investigated by the Stamford Police.
