UK HORROR: Latest on the 39 migrants frozen dead in a reefer container

PortandTerminal.com, October 25, 2019

Last Wednesday, the bodies of 39 Chinese and Vietnamese migrants who froze to death in a refrigerated (reefer) container were discovered. England is in horror and shock. They should be horrified. They shouldn’t be shocked.

ESSEX, ENGLANDThe discovery of 39 Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants found frozen to death in the back of a truck has exposed how human trafficking gangs are continuing to exploit a 5,000-mile people-smuggling route from China to the UK.

A conveyor belt of victims is being brought to Britain on journeys through Asia and mainland Europe, through countries like Bulgaria (marked on the map) then to Holland or Belgium and into the UK. It is a journey that can take months, in a criminal racket that has been ongoing for years

There are fears and growing evidence that the refrigerated (reefer) container in which the 39 people were found dead may have been used to smuggle more people into the UK on multiple occasions.

According to England’s “Daily Mail” newspaper, the -25C, sound-proofed reefer container stopped in the French ports of Dunkirk and Calais during three trips to Belgium, before it headed to Zeebrugge and then Purfleet in the UK late on Tuesday night.

At minus 30 F (minus 34 C), an otherwise healthy person who isn’t properly dressed for the cold could experience hypothermia in as little as 10 minutes

31 men and eight women were found dead in the container early on Wednesday morning. It is not yet known how long they were inside, but they would have travelled approximately 5,000 miles and would have entered the EU from Bulgaria.

Victim Pham Thi Tra My had sent a text message to her mother saying she could not breathe at about the time the truck container was en route from Belgium to Britain.

“I’m sorry Mom. My journey abroad hasn’t succeeded,” read a haunting text sent Tuesday night by Pham Thi Tra My, 26. “Mom, I love you so much! I’m dying because I can’t breathe.”

“I’m sorry Mom. My path to abroad doesn’t succeed. Mom, I love you so much! I’m dying bcoz I can’t breathe,”

Victim text message

The dead migrants reportedly each paid the people smugglers $25,000 to transport then to Europe.

Truck driver Driver Maurice Robinson charged with the manslaughter of 39 people

Maurice Robinson, the driver of the truck, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He reportedly fainted when he discovered the bodies and is being questioned on whether he knew the migrants were in the container.

Opening raw wounds

In 2000 at the Port of Dover, 58 Chinese nationals were discovered dead due to suffocation in the back of a shipping container

The latest migrant tragedy is deja-vu similar to the deaths of 58 Chinese citizens in 2000, who suffocated in a container in Dover – and Chinese state media has heavily criticized the UK authorities for failing to prevent it.

In an editorial headlined ‘The UK must bear responsibility’, the Global Times said: “Imagine what thorough measures European countries would take if dozens of Europeans died in the same way?

“Let me ask Britain and the European government why they failed to avoid a similar tragedy after the Dover tragedy? Did they take all the serious remedial action that they could have?”
