Caracas, Venezuela – Recent coverage of Venezuela’s descent into chaos usually focuses on two things. The first are the economic horrors suffered by its desperate population. The second is the political brinksmanship being carried out by Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaido, who both claim the title of president of Venezuela.
What’s mentioned less often is that the chaos has fuelled a rise in smuggling and maritime piracy in Venezuela. As Colin Freeman in his article for The Spectator summarizes “It’s not quite Somalia – but it isn’t far off”
