DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – Five crew members of the heavy-lift vessel Boka Vanguard are in hospital in South Africa with suspected alcohol poisoning while another crewman’s body remains on board the ship.

The vessel was carrying oil industry equipment from China to Brazil when the incident occurred. The five surviving personnel were transferred to a hospital in Durban, South Africa by helicopter.

The Boka Vanguard is the largest heavy-lift ship in the world

According to Boskalis, the six men, all Brazilians, drank some sort of improvised alcohol which in all likelihood contained a mixture of ethanol and the highly toxic methanol.

The company emphasizes that it pursues a zero-tolerance policy with regard to alcohol on its offshore vessels. The “Vanguard” has since resumed the trip to Brazil.
