SANTIAGO, CHILE – It’s every environmentalist’s worst nightmare – a shipping accident in the ecologically sensitive Arctic or Antarctic regions.

There are reports that LA MANCHE (IMO: 8226739), a refrigerated cargo ship, ran aground at around 1500 UTC Apr 22 in Maxwell Bay, King George Island, Drake Passage, Antarctica.

The incident occurred while the ship was carrying out boarding tasks for personnel from the Uruguayan base “Artigas”, approximately 500 meters from the coast for reasons still unknown.

The good news is that so far there is no hull breach or water ingress reported.
