MOSCOW, RUSSIA – A fire aboard an advanced Russian submarine killed 14 elite crew members on Monday. A portion of the crew survived, Russia’s defence minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday.
Russian officials have not commented on the type of vessel involved in the deadly fire. The submarine though is being widely reported by analysts to be the Losharik.
In remarks to media about the loss on the Losharik disaster, President Vladimir Putin said that seven of the victims held the rank of captain. Another two of them were recipients of the “Hero of Russia” medal – the nation’s equivalent of the U.S. military’s Congressional Medal of Honor.
The loss of such decorated navy experts and their colleagues on board the submarine Losharik is a bitter loss. Russia is in state mourning.
