“I like the number being where they are. I don’t need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn’t our fault” President Trump said during a visit to CDC yesterday.

WASHINGTON – Vice President Mike Pence says 21 people aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship off the California coast have tested positive for the new coronavirus, including 19 crew members. Of the 2,422 guests and 1,111 crew members, only 46 of them though have been tested so far.
The California Air National Guard air-dropped coronavirus testing kits to the ship on Thursday in a dramatic operation caught on video.
Medical officials collected samples from 46 people on board — some of whom showed symptoms — and flew them to a lab in Richmond, the cruise line said, according to CNN.
“We will be testing everyone on the ship,” Vice President Pence said.
A total of 2,422 guests and 1,111 crew members representing 54 different nationalities are on board the vessel, according to Princess Cruises.
President Trump’s reaction
The US government plans to take the Grand Princess to a “non-commercial port” where all the passengers and crew would be tested, however, President Donald Trump said on Friday he would prefer not to allow the passengers onto American soil.

The President said yesterday that he would prefer not to let 3,533 people on board a cruise ship held off the coast of California disembark onto American soil, even if they were placed into quarantine, in part because it would inflate the number of American infections and make the situation look worse.
“It’s a big decision because we have very low numbers compared to major countries throughout the world,” he said of how to deal with the cruise ship. “Our numbers are lower than just about anybody.”
But he added that he had backed down from that position and authorized federal health officials to decide the matter as they saw fit.
One thing is clear, the passengers on board the Grand Princess need to be taken off the ship as quickly as onshore quarantines can be safely arranged.
The fiasco of the recent Diamond Princess quarantine showed that on board isolation does not work.
Experts are now saying that the cruise ship which was quarantined off of Japan became a breeding ground for the virus. People who were healthy are believed to have become infected while being held in quarantine on the Diamond Princess.

In the end, 705 of the passengers and crew on board came down with the virus. It is still unclear how the virus spread during the quarantine, but it did. There can be no repeat of that deadly mistake.
