President Trump issues warning to protesters ahead of Saturday’s Tulsa rally

PortandTerminal.com, June 19, 2020

TULSA, OK – President Trump today sent an ominous warning to any potential protestors, anarchists and so on who may be planning to demonstrate at his June 19th campaign rally being held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. You will, he said, “not be treated like you have been in New York, Seattle, or Minneapolis”.

The president has been openly critical of the handling of protests in those cities having advocated much tougher policing measures be taken to break up protests.

For many, this latest warning from the president reminds them of his now-infamous “When the looting starts, the shooting starts” tweet sent during protests following the recent death of George Floyd, an African-American man in Minneapolis

Civil emergency declared

The president’s latest tweet comes after Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum, a Republican, declared a civil emergency and announced a curfew near the arena where Trump plans to hold a campaign rally on Saturday.

Bynum, in his order, said “in the interest of national security,” he would establish a “federal exclusion zone” in the vicinity of the rally.

Due to the threat and related factors, Bynum imposed a curfew in the vicinity of the rally from late Thursday night to 6 a.m. on Saturday — the day of the rally — and from the conclusion of the rally Saturday night until 6 a.m. on Sunday.

The curfew prohibits people from “walking, running, loitering, standing or motoring upon any alley, street, highway, public property, sidewalk, or vacant premises” within the vicinity covered by the curfew.

Oklahoma is currently experiencing a recent surge of new COVID-19 infections and officials have expressed concern about the timing of the President’s rally. Many worry that hosting a large event such as the election rally in an enclosed space will lead to even more infections.

Attendees to rally are being told that they must sign a release form acknowledging that they “voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19” and agree not to hold the campaign or venue liable should they get sick.

The director of the Tulsa Health Department said he wishes President Donald Trump would postpone his planned campaign rally citing concerns about a recent increase in local cases of Covid-19.
