BOCA DO JARI, BRAZIL – A river passenger ship ANNA KAROLINE III with some 60 passengers on board sank early in the morning Feb 29 in the Amazon River near Boca do Jari, while en route upstream from Macapa to Santarem, Brazil. An alert was sent out by the ship’s captain at 05:00 am.
According to video posted on social media, the ship was carrying a large cargo and was already leaking as it left port.
There were reportedly 60 or so passengers on board. A number of people are reported missing, some who survived suffered injures. As of 09:00 am two women were reported dead and 20 other people as missing.
The following grainy video was posted on social media one hour reportedly showing the rescue of a victim by locals. We can not confirm its authenticity at this time.
According to the ship’s captain, after a strong wind, passengers fell into the water, with some being rescued by a passing ferry.
