A Canadian oilfield company has been widely condemned for printing a sexually graphic image of 17-year old climate activist Greta Thunberg. Turns out it’s not the first time they’ve done something like that.
CALGARY, ALBERTA – Yesterday we reported on a company called X-Site Energy Services that is being widely condemned for printing a marketing decal depicting Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg in a sexually submissive position.
Ms Thunberg’s strong position against fossil fuels is widely unpopular amongst people working in Canada’s oil industry. “Many a mediocre white man responded to Greta by screeching like a howler monkey on a meth bender” writes author and speaker James Fell commenting on the Swedish climate activist.
She is also a 17-year old teenager which raised the question amongst some whether X-Site Energy Services distasteful decal constituted child pornography. For the record, Canada’s RCMP has said that it does not.
Doug Sparrow of X-Site Energy Services told a local news outlet, rdNewsNow, that the decal was not made or endorsed by either himself or any employee of his company. He alleges that an unknown third party has posted it to Facebook.
“It’s not from X-Site or any employee,” Sparrow told the radio station. “Someone has done this. That’s all I know.”
That’s simply not true according to an oil patch worker interviewed by HuffPost Canada on a condition of anonymity, fearing repercussions at their job. The sticker, reading “X-Site Energy Services,” was handed out recently as promotional material at job sites to be worn on hard hats, the worker said.
It also turns out that this latest scandal with Greta Thurnberg isn’t X-Site Energy Services’ first rodeo as they say out west.
The company has a history of using sexist imagery to promote itself, and its president Doug Farrow has made clearly racist comments on social media in the past. Here are two examples.
“Justin must go, and need to keep the guy with the towel on his head out, vote conservative” Sparrow posted in October referring to two of the candidates running in Canada’s recent federal election. Justin refers to Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau. The “guy with the towel on his head” is presumably Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s national NDP political party.
Few are buying Doug Sparrow’s denials and the blow-back on this latest lapse in judgement has sent him to ground. Sparrow has removed both his LinkedIn and Twitter profiles. Sparrow also declined a request for an interview when contacted by CBC News.
In case anyone believes the CEO’s denial, the company has a history of using sexist imagery to promote itself, and the CEO likes making racist comments on social media.James Fell, Author and Speaker
The final word. What does Greta Thunberg have to say?
