79-year-old founder and chairman of container shipping line MSC, Gianluigi Aponte, has decided to pass the torch to his son
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – MSC’s founder, 79-year-old Gianluigi Aponte, will step down as chairman and pass the torch on to his son, Diego Aponte, who has until now served as CEO, reports the Wall Street Journal. This makes room for Maersk’s former COO, Søren Toft, who will take over as new chief executive officer.
Last week in a surprise move, Søren Toft, former COO at Maersk, announced that he was leaving the company to take on a CEO position elsewhere. After several days of industry speculation as to where he was headed, it was announced that he has taken the job of CEO at Maersk rival shipping company MSC.
The only outstanding question with Toft’s move to MSC as its new CEO was the future role of Diego Aponte, MSC’s current CEO. The retirement of his father and company founder Gianluigi Aponte as Chairman of the shipping line has neatly created a solution to that problem.
MSC runs more than 470 container ships across all main shipping routes world-wide and controls nearly 16% of the capacity in a sector at the center of global trade. The company is also one of the world’s top five cruise operators.
