Maritime Image of the Day: Mont-Saint-Michel surrounded by the sea

PortandTerminal.com, October 20, 2020

PARIS – France’s famous tourist monument, Mont-Saint-Michel, home to 33 people, temporarily became an island amid high tides on Sunday.

The rare phenomenon happens when the water surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage Site rises as fast as it recedes. Located off the Normandy coast, the mount, topped by its world-renowned Benedictine abbey traditionally welcomes up to two million visitors a year.

Translation: “The Mont-Saint-Michel became an island yesterday thanks to a high tide, an exceptional phenomenon during which the water rises as quickly as it has withdrawn. For a few hours, the famous tourist monument is cut off from the world.
