AMSTERDAM – This week a blast of Arctic air hit the Netherlands sending temperatures plummeting and causing some of the country’s famous canals to freeze over. Many welcomed the rare opportunity to put on their skates and enjoy some fresh air amid coronavirus restrictions. Happily, Dutch photographer Rick Bekker was on-hand to capture the moment.
Little Ace Age
You would be excused for thinking that Bekker’s photograph of skaters on frozen canals was taken in another century instead of just last week. In the 17th-century Dutch painters produced a number of works depicting people doing exactly the same thing during a time that is now referred to as Europe’s “Little Ice Age”
Rick Bekker is a Dutch landscape and storm-chaser photographer based in Heerjansdam, a small village just south of the port city of Rotterdam. Check out more of his work on his social media sites. We’ve also included a sample of another one of our favourites Bekker took in 2020 using a drone.
