Editor’s note: “Image of the Day” is a new feature that we have recently launched. We work in an amazing industry. Let’s celebrate its beauty together by sharing the incredible imagery taken by our colleagues of what we do. Have a photo/video to share? Please send it to email@example.com along with the name of the photographer who took it (if available) so that we can give them the credit that they are due.
The photo above of the La Jument lighthouse off the coast of Normandy, France was taken by Mathieu Rivrin. It captures the dramatic moment a lighthouse off the coast of France was pummeled by a massive 160ft-high wave while in the epicentre of a storm. We couldn’t resist stitching together a GIF of the wave as it hit the lighthouse (see below).
Winds reaching 85mph helped whip up the massive swell – which was so powerful spray from the sea was felt in the helicopter carrying the photographer.
You may also recognize this other iconic photo of the La Jument lighthouse above. In 1989, in the midst of a raging storm off the Brittany coast, photographer Jean Guichard circled above the French lighthouse of la Jument (Le Phare de La Jument) in a helicopter, camera in hand to capture the storm. Hearing the helicopter, keeper Theodore Malgorne came out to investigate but retreated quickly as a huge wave crashed into the lighthouse.
