Ontario extends its state of emergency to June 2; cases rise for 2nd straight day after 6-week low
TORONTO, ONTARIO – Today, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned Congress today that a premature lifting of lockdowns could lead to additional outbreaks of the deadly coronavirus and risk setting the country further back economically. In Canada’s economic powerhouse province of Ontario today, its top doctor was echoing exactly the same message.
Canada’s CBC News is reporting that Ontario’s top doctor, Dr. David Williams, says he does not feel confident that the province has met the threshold to start on its economic recovery plan. His statement comes just hours after his boss, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, announced that the details of the first stage of reopening will be unveiled Thursday.
Ontario, which has a population of 14.6 million people, has 22,158 confirmed COVID-19 infections and 1,852 deaths.
Premier Doug Ford has been clear on one message though, reopening of Ontario’s economy or not, he believes that it is far too soon to open Ontario’s borders with the United States.
So for now, Dr. Williams and Premier Ford will need to debate on the timing of opening Ontario again for business. But there is no debate among them that Ontario’s borders will remain closed.
