MOSCOW, RUSSIA – On May 5, 2019, Aeroflot Flight 1492 took off from Moscow Sheremetyevo airport headed towards Murmansk, Russia.
Shortly after taking off, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 model aircraft was struck by lightning. The aircraft suffered an electrical failure and returned to Sheremetyevo for an emergency landing.
While attempting to land, the airplane hit down hard, causing the landing gear to collapse, fuel to spill out of the wings and fire to erupt. The fire engulfed the rear of the aircraft, and 41 of the 78 occupants were unable to evacuate and lost their lives.
An investigation into the tragedy was launched. The SKR, The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, recently published this new video of the incident.
