“The Coronavirus can only survive in cold temperatures, so the Caribbean is a fantastic choice for your next cruise,”
MIAMI, FL – A whistleblower at Norwegian Cruise Lines has said that they have been instructed to downplay or even lie about the seriousness of coronavirus to keep sales levels up.
The Miami New Times is reporting today that it has seen leaked emails from an employee of Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) in which the managers at the company asked sales staff to lie to customers about COVID-19 to protect the company’s bookings.
“These discussions take place every day. And even during our department meetings, managers tell us that it isn’t a big deal, that more people die from other things,” says the employee, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. “[They’re] constantly underestimating it.”
“The Coronavirus can only survive in cold temperatures, so the Caribbean is a fantastic choice for your next cruise,” one of the misleading talking points shared with sales staff read, according to the report.
“Scientists and medical professionals have confirmed that the warm weather of the spring will be the end of the Coronavirus,” was another canned response to customer concerns.
The company is pushing employees to keep up bookings and will fire or put on performance plans those who don’t meet sales quotas, according to the employee who spoke with the Miami New Times.
Cruise lines have been hit hard by the coronavirus. Norwegian Cruise Lines has seen it share price in the past year drop from a high of almost $60/share to just $15.35 today.
