Iran says it detained fuel ship near Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Navy has seized a fuel-smuggling tanker near Abu Musa island in the Persian Gulf.

TEHRAN – Iranian state media are reporting that the country’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has seized a foreign tanker and crew that it says were carrying illegal oil.

Sixteen Malaysian crew members were detained. The tanker, intercepted near Abu Musa island, was carrying 1.3 million litres of smuggled fuel, IRNA said, or the equivalent of just 8,176 barrels.

“This is the sixth vessel carrying smuggled fuel that the IRGC’s maritime forces have seized,” the naval commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ali Azmaei, told IRNA.

In July, Iran also seized a British-flagged oil tanker, The Stena Impero, amid high regional tensions over Tehran’s collapsing nuclear deal with world powers. It also seized a United Arab Emirates-based oil tanker.
