Multiple people are dead and dozens are unaccounted after large boat fire off California’s Santa Cruz Island. Horrifying mayday call – “Can you get back onboard and unlock the boat?” USCG dispatcher asks
SANTA CRUZ, CA – 34 people are missing Monday morning after a scuba expedition caught fire near Santa Cruz Island, California; with officials saying just five people have been rescued from the inferno.
Reports are that all 5 confirmed survivors were crew members of the boat who were sleeping on deck and were not locked below in the cabins of the vessel.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr Matthew Kroll has said that 34 people were unaccounted for from a commercial diving ship. The captain of the boat was helping with the rescue. Four other people were rescued. Lt. Cmdr Kroll later confirmed the ship sunk near the north shore of Santa Cruz Island after taking on water.”
Horrifying Mayday call

CNN is reporting the mayday call from a crewmember who called in the fire to the Coast Guard dispatcher from Los Angeles.
The dispatcher is heard asking the crewmember “Can you get back onboard and unlock the boat?
In another question, the dispatcher asked, “…is there an escape hatch for any of the people on board?”
“you don’t have any firefighting equipment, no fire extinguishers or anything” the dispatcher is heard to ask the crew member.
