KIEL, GERMANY – On Saturday morning, two cargo ships collided head-on in the Kiel Canal in Germany. Both ships are from the same company which is going to make for a difficult team meeting on Monday when the incident is discussed and the blame is allocated.
Both of the vessels sustained significant damages — one of them after the collision ran onto the embankment and had to be taken off of it by tugs.
According to the police, the Kiel Canal is free and the accident site is passable for other ships. There were no injuries on board either of the freighters, a spokesman said. It is still unclear how the accident at the mouth of the Eider near Schacht-Audorf came about.
One of the two ships is identified in the photo taken after the accident, as general cargo ship RIX STAR the other is RIX PARTNER, operated by the same Latvian company RIX SHIPMANAGEMENT.
This isn’t the first major collision in the Kiel Canal. Back in 2015 the Kiel Canal Gate was severely damaged after a ship collided into it (see video below).
