FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Typically when we report on freighters being attacked and robbed the location of the incident is usually in the Gulf of Guinea off the African coast. Not this time.
A German inland cargo ship, the HELLFRIED was attacked early in the morning Oct 24 on the Danube river near the Port of Smederovo in Serbia.

The attackers are reported to have siphoned about a ton of fuel, and fled. This is not an isolated incident and reportedly the second act of piracy involving fuel theft in this year. Other robberies involving different cargos have also been reported. Piracy is apparently alive and well in 21st century Europe.
