WASHINGTON – Does President Trump have coronavirus? Maybe. We don’t know. And that’s not the point. He MAY have it and whether he does or not is a question lots of people in America are starting to ask Google.
It’s obviously an important question.
America is facing a major epidemic, the President has been exposed to people who have contracted the virus and people need to know if their leader is healthy or not. Certainly, the people around him need to know whether or not the President is safe to be around. The optics of the White House becoming a coronavirus epicentre would be both acutely embarrassing and damaging to the nation’s ability to manage the crisis.
No shame in it
If President Trump has contracted the virus he wouldn’t be the first major political leader to get it, and probably won’t be the last. Politicians come in frequent contact with lots of people – it’s an occupational hazard.
Nine US lawmakers — some of whom had recent contact with President Trump — are now taking steps to self-quarantine as a precaution after coming into contact with another infected person.
Yesterday we learned that Canada’s leader Justin Trudeau is currently trying to run Canada while in self-isolation after his wife, Sophie, tested positive for coronavirus.
But perhaps most alarming is the fact that last weekend, at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump came into contact with a Brazilian press aide, Fabio Wajngarten, who was diagnosed on Thursday with coronavirus.
“Both the president and vice president had ALMOST no interactions with the individual (Fabio Wajngarten) who tested positive,” the White House press secretary said. And that’s ALMOST true. President Trump did have ALMOST no interactions with him except for the one below.
After meeting President Trump, later that evening Mr. Wajngarten attended a party at the resort hosted by Kimberly Ann Guilfoyle who is working as a senior adviser for President Trump’s re-election campaign and is the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr, the president’s eldest son.
There is now also concern for the President’s daughter and adviser, Ivanka Trump, who came into contact with Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who confirmed Friday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Google wants to know
On Google, the search queries for “Does Trump have coronavirus” show a definite upward trend over the past week. Which may or may not mean anything, other than the fact that there is enough chatter out there for a lot of people to Google the question to find out.
Perhaps more interesting is WHERE the queries “Does Trump have coronavirus” are coming from. After Vermont, Bernie Sanders’ home state, the second-largest source of queries is coming from Washington, DC. Read into that what you will.
The bottom line
Does President Trump have coronavirus? We don’t know and neither does Google. And for that matter, neither do Americans during this crisis. All President Trump has said that he has not been tested and “feels fine”.
What we do know is that people shouldn’t have to ask Google whether their president is healthy and well enough to lead the country during a major crisis. Take the darn test, President Trump and let us know. Your nation is counting on you.
