Container ship loses containers off Dutch coast

ROTTERDAM – The Dutch registered container ship OOCL Rauma lost at least five containers on Tuesday afternoon, 25 miles north of Ameland off the coast of the Netherlands. The news comes via the Netherlands Coastguard.

Much of Northern Europe has been experiencing very heavy weather as Storm Ciara batters the region. The storm has caused widespread flight and train cancellations as well as port closures. Five deaths have been blamed on the storm.

OOCL Rauma

The vessel was coming from the Finnish port of Kotka and was on its way to Rotterdam through German waters. A Coast Guard aircraft is on its way to take pictures in the area and to locate the containers where possible.

The ship, which sails under the Dutch flag, lost the containers at wind force 8, gale rated winds – from the west. A total of 1,425 containers can be carried on board the ship.
