President H.W. Bush’s famously hated broccoli. Maybe he had good reason to.
PHARR, TX— U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO) discovered over 3,000 pounds of marijuana concealed within a commercial shipment of broccoli at a Texas-Mexico border crossing last Saturday.
“I do not like broccoli, and I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m president of the United States, and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli!”President H.W. Bush speaking to the press in 1990
On May 16, 2020, CBP officers assigned to the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge referred a commercial shipment of fresh broccoli arriving from Mexico for a secondary inspection. That inspection resulted in the discovery of 378 packages of suspected marijuana.
According to CBP, the total seizure weighed 3,159 pounds and was estimated at $632,000.
“This is a substantial amount of narcotics that will not make it into our communities,” stated Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
CBP seized the shipment, the truck-tractor and trail, the marijuana, and the case was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation.
