BEIRUT – Two people were killed when the Orient Queen Cruise ship, berthed near the site of the massive explosion in Beirut on Tuesday, took on water, listed and sank yesterday. Seven others are reported to have been injured in the incident.
Earlier we reported that the vessel had been severely damaged in the blast and was listing as shown in the photo below. “The ship is totally destroyed – the cabins, the lounge, everything,” a crew member told Al Jazeera.
According to the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs, the two killed in the incident were from the Philippines.
The cruise ship is owned by Abou Marhi Cruises. Until the coronavirus pandemic struck the industry, it carried out week-long cruises to the Greek islands and Turkey, with stops in Marmaris, Kusadasi, Mykonos, Athens, Nafplio, Paros and Rhodes.
